Why It Matters

Preparedness Is Not Just About Equipment

Cardiac preparedness is about people, placement, process, and response — and organisations have a legal and moral duty of care to those in their care.

Time is critical

During cardiac events, every minute matters. Quick access to an AED and a clear response protocol can be the difference between life and death.

📋

Duty of care & OHS Act

The South African Occupational Health and Safety Act places a duty on employers to provide a safe working environment for employees and visitors.

🏢

Organisational risk reduction

Preparedness protects your staff, clients, learners, and guests — and reduces operational and reputational risk in the event of an incident.

🔗

Equipment alone is not enough

AED ownership without placement strategy, staff awareness, maintenance, and a response plan leaves critical gaps.

Every minutewithout defibrillation, survival chances drop by 7–10%.
33.6%survival rate when a bystander uses an AED in a public setting — more than triple the 10.5% average without one. (CARES 2024 Annual Report)
50–74%survival rate with immediate on-site defibrillation, compared to 8–10% without access to an AED. (PMC Systematic Review, 2023)
90%survival rate when defibrillation is delivered within the first minute of cardiac arrest. (SCA Foundation / AED Total Solution, 2026)

The Risk

A Cardiac Emergency Leaves Very Little Time to Figure Things Out

Many organisations have first aiders — but that does not mean they are ready for a cardiac emergency. These are the gaps EMS sees most often:

No AED on site, or AED not placed where it can be reached quickly

Staff unsure who responds first — no clear emergency roles

No written emergency response plan matched to the site layout

No regular drills or readiness reviews

Emergency equipment not checked or maintained

Leadership assuming "it won't happen here"

Primary Service

Book an On-Site Cardiac Preparedness Review

EMS conducts an on-site review of your facility to assess AED readiness, emergency response planning, and cardiac preparedness — and provides practical, actionable recommendations.

During the review, EMS checks:

  • Does the site have AED coverage?
  • Are AEDs placed where they can be accessed quickly?
  • Is there a documented response plan?
  • Do staff know what to do in an emergency?
  • Are emergency roles clearly assigned?
  • Is emergency equipment appropriate for the site?
  • Are written protocols in place?
  • Are there gaps that could delay response time?

Ready to Review Your Site?

The review is conducted on-site. Duration depends on facility size. Pricing is discussed directly with EMS based on your scope and requirements.

Who EMS Helps

Organisations & Individuals Across South Africa

EMS works with any organisation or individual that has a duty of care, a risk profile, or a need for professional cardiac preparedness support.

🏢

Corporate Offices & Head Offices

Large staff populations, executive teams, and visitors — all in environments where a cardiac event can happen at any time.

🏭

Industrial & Manufacturing Sites

High-physical-demand environments with elevated cardiac risk and often limited access to emergency services.

🏫

Schools, Colleges & Universities

Staff, learners, and visitors across large campuses — often with limited first-responder capacity.

🏟

Sports Clubs & Sporting Events

Athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators — cardiac events in sport are more common than most people realise.

🏨

Hotels, Resorts & Hospitality Venues

Guests and staff across large properties where response time and AED placement are critical.

🏛

Government & Public Sector

Public buildings, government offices, and community facilities with a duty of care to staff and the public.

Places of Worship & Community Centres

Congregations and community gatherings — often with older demographics and limited medical readiness.

🏗

Construction Sites

Remote or semi-remote sites with physically demanding work and often delayed emergency response times.

🧑‍💼

Executives & Private Clients

Individuals and families who want personal medical support, preparedness planning, or private event cover.

How It Works

A Clear, Structured Process

EMS follows a consistent, professional process — from initial conversation through to implementation and ongoing support. No ambiguity, no surprises.

01

Initial Consultation

A no-obligation conversation to understand your organisation, your current readiness, and what you are trying to achieve. We discuss your site, your staff, your risk profile, and your existing equipment.

02

On-Site Assessment

Tom visits your premises and conducts a structured review — AED placement, response protocols, staff capability, equipment condition, and documentation. You receive a written report with clear findings.

03

Recommendations & Planning

We present practical, prioritised recommendations. No unnecessary upselling — only what your organisation genuinely needs to close the gaps identified in the assessment.

04

Implementation Support

EMS can assist with training coordination, equipment sourcing, protocol documentation, and ongoing support — or hand off a clear action plan for your team to execute independently.

05

Ongoing Relationship

Cardiac preparedness is not a one-time exercise. EMS offers annual reviews, refresher training coordination, event standby cover, and ongoing advisory support as your organisation evolves.

Common Questions

"We Think We're Already Covered"

These are the most common reasons organisations delay taking action on cardiac preparedness — and why each one deserves a closer look.

"We already have first aiders on site."

First aid training and cardiac emergency preparedness are not the same thing. Most first-aid certificates cover basic CPR — but they do not address AED placement strategy, written response protocols, staff confidence under pressure, or the operational gaps that determine whether a response actually works. EMS assesses the full picture, not just whether someone holds a certificate.

"We have AEDs installed — we're covered."

Having an AED on the wall is the starting point, not the finish line. The critical questions are: Does your staff know where it is? Can they reach it in under three minutes? Is it maintained and inspection-current? Is there a written protocol? EMS has reviewed sites where AEDs were present but would not have been used effectively in an emergency.

"Our insurance covers us if something happens."

Insurance covers liability after an event. It does not save a life during one. The legal and reputational consequences of an inadequate response — and the human cost — are not mitigated by a policy. Organisations have a duty of care that goes beyond financial coverage.

"We're a small organisation — this isn't relevant to us."

Cardiac emergencies do not scale with headcount. A 20-person office is as likely to experience a cardiac event as a 200-person facility — and often less prepared. EMS works with organisations of all sizes and tailors recommendations to what is practical and proportionate.

"We'll deal with it when we need to."

The moment you need it is the worst time to discover you are not ready. Cardiac arrest survival rates drop by approximately 10% for every minute without defibrillation. The average emergency services response time in South Africa is 15–20 minutes. The gap between those two numbers is the reason preparation matters.

"We've never had an incident — we must be fine."

The absence of a previous incident is not evidence of preparedness. It is evidence of good fortune. Organisations that have experienced a cardiac emergency often describe the same thing: they thought they were ready, and they were not.

Tom Watson · Founder, Executive Medical Services

Tom Watson founded Executive Medical Services after more than four decades working in emergency medicine across South Africa and Internationally. His career spans paramedic practice, emergency medical care, and operational medical management — giving him a practical, ground-level understanding of what actually happens when a cardiac emergency occurs in a workplace or public setting.

EMS was built on a single observation: most organisations have first aiders, but very few are genuinely prepared for a cardiac emergency. The gap between having a first-aid certificate and having a functioning emergency response system is significant — and it is the gap that EMS exists to close.

Tom holds a National Diploma in Emergency Medical Care from the University of Johannesburg and is a registered Fellow of the Medical Association. He is HPCSA registered and is based on the Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu-Natal, serving clients across all provinces of South Africa.

"The question is never whether a cardiac emergency can happen at your organisation. The question is whether you will be ready when it does."
